Introduction
Avondhu Development Group is one of 37 groups nationwide mandated to develop and co-ordinate community based transport services. Using funding from the Department of Transport’s ‘Rural Transport Programme’ and the Dormant Accounts Fund, the aim of the Avondhu Area Rural Transport project is to promote social inclusion in the Avondhu – Blackwater area through supporting the establishment and development of affordable and accessible transport to meet the needs of local people. It seeks to improve access, especially for those who are most marginalised, to essential services, training/employment opportunities and recreational facilities.

Shared Hackney for People with Disabilities
In response to the need for better access to transport for people with mobility difficulties, Avondhu Development commenced the ‘Dial-a-lift’ taxi service in April 2003 with wheelchair accessible taxis in the Mallow and Fermoy areas. This is a taxi voucher scheme which enables people to access local services such as education and training, work placements and social and recreational events. In 2007, over 200 club members received a subsidy which typically allows for one return trip per week from their home to the nearest urban centre. Trips are shared with other members when possible. Many of the members also use the regular rural services provided by Avondhu Development in addition to connecting onwards to further destinations with Bus Éireann and Irish Rail.

Comments
A word from the Chair of our transport committee - Mr. John Carroll, Dromahane Community Council, who represents rural communities on the board of Avondhu Development Group:

“Since the project was launched in 2002, people isolated in villages and townlands in the area have been accessing essential services such as education & training, shopping, medical appointments, recreation, connection to mainstream transport etc, and all our services travel to the most remote areas to collect and return people to their doorsteps. We have seen an increase in the amount of young people using the services, especially during school holidays. The ongoing funding is just reward for the success of the project in effectively meeting local transport needs. "

What customers say about our services - Mr. Pat Beecher, who regularly uses the service on Thursday from Castlelyons-Conna-Coolagown & Clondulane to Fermoy:

“We are very satisfied with the service. The bus collects and drops us to our homes. Only for this service we would be very isolated. This initiative has given people much independence and a new lease of life.”

Fares
We operate a very simple fare structure: The Free Travel Pass is accepted. If you don’t have a Free Travel Pass, services cost €3 one way for adults (€5 return), €2 one way for students (€3 return), Free for Children before Primary level.
Some evening services cost €5.00 to €7.50 one way, with concessions for Free Travel Pass holders.

Booking a seat:
We advise that seats should be booked in advance, if possible before 5.00 pm on the day before your intended trip. So if you want to travel on Friday, you should contact us before 5.00 pm on Thursday to ensure that your request can be dealt with.
